Microsoft announced a new certification, the Microsoft Certified Architect. The MCA is to Microsoft certs what the CCIE is to Cisco. Think of it as the PhD of Microsoft certification.

SUN Microsystems went the opposite way, announcing it would soon have a certification designed for entry-level IT personnel(Sun Certified Java Associate (SCJA)). It is in beta - More info: http://www.sun.com/training/certification/java/associate_beta.xml
